When choosing an area rug size, many factors come into consideration. As a general rule of thumb, if you intend for the rug to fill an entire room, always leave at least 18-inches of bare floor between the edge of the rug and the baseboards. As for other rules and guidelines, these vary by room. We've created this rug guide to help you tread through the options.

A rug used under a bed should extend about 18 inches from the sides of a King or Queen-sized bed and 12 inches for a Full or Twin-sized bed. The rug extension can be much longer than this, and depends on how much of a statement you want the rug to make in the room, but 12" is the shortest you should go.

A rug used under a dining room table should have at least 24" of rug space from the table edges to the rug's edges on all sides. This allows the chairs' legs to stay on the rug even when they are pulled out while someone is seated on it, and will reduce scratches to your floor.
