All furniture will wear down as you continue to use it, but this is especially true for outdoor furniture because it is less protected from the elements. Sunlight can cause old fabrics to fade and abrasion can lead to tearing and fraying in them as well. Furthermore, you might notice that the underlying padding beneath the surface in your seating has become uneven and less comfortable over time. Here, we’ll discuss how to update your outdoor furniture upholstery so that you can keep your patio neat and fresh.

Change the Cushion Covers

When your current furniture fabric is only slightly damaged or you want to alter the style of your outdoor arrangements, you may change the cushion covers on your furniture. You can remove the old fabric by peeling it away and taking off any fasteners as needed. Maintain the fabric’s shape as you do this and take note of how it was originally attached to the furnishing and where. Pin the old fabric flat on your new sheets of fabric and use it as a template to cut the correct shapes out. You can then sew those shapes together, envelope the bare cushions with them, and then staple them onto the cushions.

Fully Reupholster

If your furniture cushioning and fabric are both worn out, you can fully reupholster as well. To do this, you’ll need to obtain foam. In general, denser foams are of higher quality and will last longer without deteriorating. You can layer more than one piece of foam on top of one another in order to fill out your seats even more. It’s also a common practice to vary foam densities between pieces, with denser, harder foam laying the foundation for the seat and lighter, softer foam sitting on top to make it more comfortable.

Once you’ve obtained the cushioning materials, you can cut out the correct fabric shapes to surround your foam. Make sure to give about a four- to five-inch allowance with them so that you can sew it. It’s also a good idea to double check your fabric dimensions before you take your scissors to them. Cut your fabric and sew together the seams to form a cover. Leave one side open so that you can easily remove the fabric if you want to in the future and either sew on Velcro or a zipper to this final side. With this done, all that remains is to place your new upholstery cushions on your furniture.
